Your Questions About Travel Insurance

Mandy asks…

Is travel insurance worth it?

Does it just cover medical or other losses? What if you're travelling in countries that have cheap cost healthcare anyway, like Thailand or Vietnam. Would it be even more expensive for doctor visits with insurance than just paying out of pocket?

NewsDesk answers:

1. Some types of medical care are not available there, at any price. If you need medical care that is not available in those countries, some travel insurance pays whatever is necessary to get you back to the U.S., even an air ambulance, if needed. (When citizens of those countries need medical care not available in those countries, they usually die.)

2. "Cheap" is a relative term. Even if it costs less than in the U.S., it could still cost more than you can afford. For example, some medical care in the U.S. Costs six million dollars. Even if it costs only 1/10th of that in those countries, it would still cost $600,000 in those countries.

Paul asks…

Should I buy travel insurance for my honeymoon to Mexico?

We're headed to Playa Del Carmen for our honeymoon and it represents a significant amount of money. Is travel insurance worth it?

NewsDesk answers:

Absolutely. Buy it. It's not that much money at your age and it covers sickness, trip delay, trip interruption, medical expenses, reimbursement of many things. You never know and like you said the trip was not cheap. The unexpected can happen. It's peace of mind.

Good Luck (and congrats)

James asks…

Is travel insurance worth it? what is a good company?

NewsDesk answers:

It all depends on your general health, where you are going and what you intend to do. If your trip is likely to be interrupted (say, a hurricane in the Caribbean right before your cruise) then it's probably a good idea.

Chris asks…

Is it worth getting travel insurance to go to Paris and Spain?

I'm planning to go to Paris and several provinces of Spain. Should I get travel insurance? Any good suggestions on companies?

NewsDesk answers:

It's only worth getting travel insurance if you have to use it.

If you live in the USA or Canada, you can get Trip Cancellation / Interruption Insurance plans that include emergency medical / evacuation coverage plus they will reimburse you for the money you lose if your doctor advises you against travel because of a sickness or injury.

You can also cover pre-existing conditions.
